Those of you at WordCamp New York, or watching on Twitter, saw Aaron Jorbin’s new bow tie.
I wanted to make him a gift for his contributions to the WordPress ecosystem, and also because he’s a nice guy. I’d been mulling over ideas about WordPress-branded clothing of some sort as well.
When I handed him the little gift and he realized what it was, he started the best DANCE OF JOY I had ever seen. Off came the tie he was wearing and on came the new one, in record time! It was perfect!
For the details, because people have asked:
The design itself came from an image file repeat designed by Helen Hou-Sandà a couple years back when we were tossing around ideas for a WordPress dress.
I used Spoonflower, a custom fabric printing service to print the design as a one-off private piece. I only ordered a fat quarter of quilting cotton.
For the tie pattern itself, I used this tutorial and pieced the tie at the center back. I had interfaced it with a medium weight interfacing, so it was quite stiff and difficult to turn. I spent a lot of time at the iron. While I have made ties before, I think this was the first bow tie I’ve made.
I’m pretty happy with it.
